The Michelin guide once again rates Spanish restaurants. Some have gained another star and some have lost a star. Read about the Michelin Star restaurants around Spain

The annual Michelin restaurant star awards were announced late November 2009 and Spain now has one more three-star restaurant, four more two-star restaurants and sixteen more one-star restaurants.

The Spanish chef Joan Roca from the restaurant El Celler de Can Roca in Girona has received a third star from the Michelin Spain and Portugal Guide 2010. The Catalan chef was presented with the award in Madrid.

El Celler de Can Roca began in 1986 with Joan and two brother Jordi an Josep, they are the third generation of restaurateurs. Their second Michelin star was gained in 2001.

This now makes El Cellar de Can Roca the seventh restaurant in Spain with three stars, the others are

The Michelin guide was the creation of André Michelin a French industrialist, which was distributed free, it wasn’t until twenty year late that a guide appeared in print. The guide gave tips on car maintenance, gas and tyre suppliers on route and eventually hotels and restaurants en route. In 1926 the first Michelin Star appeared to denote worthwhile places to stay and eat, which by the early 30's that system had begun to include two and three star ratings as well.
